The Holy Rosary is one of the most powerful and beloved devotions in the Catholic Church. Through this prayer, Catholics meditate on the life of Jesus Christ while asking the Blessed Virgin Mary to intercede for them.
The Rosary is not only a series of repeated prayers. It is a prayer of reflection and meditation that helps believers grow closer to Christ. As we pray, we contemplate the mysteries of Jesus’ life through the loving guidance of Mary.
For many Catholics, praying the Rosary brings peace, spiritual strength, and a deeper connection with God. Saints and popes throughout history have strongly encouraged this devotion. Saint Padre Pio once said, “The Rosary is the weapon for these times.”
If you are praying the Rosary for the first time, the steps below will guide you through this beautiful devotion.
What Is the Holy Rosary?
The Rosary is a Catholic devotion that combines prayer and meditation. Using rosary beads, believers pray a series of traditional prayers while reflecting on important events in the life of Jesus and Mary.
The prayers of the Rosary include:

- The Our Father

- The Glory Be
Each group of ten Hail Mary prayers is called a decade, and each decade is connected to a mystery from the Gospel.

How to Pray the Rosary Step-by-Step
1. Make the Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
2. Pray the Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
He descended into hell;
on the third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there He will come to judge the living and the from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.
3. Pray the Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
4. Pray Three Hail Marys
Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
(Repeat this prayer three times.)
5. Pray the Glory Be
Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.
6. Announce the First Mystery
Announce the mystery you will meditate on (for example: The Annunciation).
Take a moment to reflect on the event in the life of Jesus and Mary.
7. Pray the Our Father
Pray one Our Father on the large bead.
8. Pray Ten Hail Marys
Pray ten Hail Marys, one for each bead, while meditating on the mystery.
9. Pray the Glory Be
At the end of the decade, pray:
Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.
You may also add the Fatima Prayer:
O my Jesus, forgive us our sins,
save us from the fires of hell,
lead all souls to heaven,
especially those most in need of your mercy.
10. Continue the Remaining Mysteries
Repeat the same pattern for the next four mysteries:
- Announce the mystery
- Pray the Our Father
- Pray ten Hail Marys
- Pray the Glory Be
Each set is called a decade. A full Rosary consists of five decades.
Closing Prayers of the Rosary
After completing the five decades, conclude with the following prayer.
Hail Holy Queen
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this our exile
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving,
O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Amen.
